Traditionally physical activity and movement were thought to only have a positive impact on the body alone. But growing research has shown that movement actually amplifies brain function. Scientific research has shown that movement increases energy, relieves stress, and helps to relax the mind and body.

Research has shown that exercise stimulates the producton of certain chemicals in the brain that helps to energize the body and elevate our mood. In addition, exercise improves blood flow which helps to bring more oxygen to the brain. This allows our brains to increase the number of connections, (synapses), in the nervous system. Thereby creating more effective communication between the brain and the body. Not only does our body benefit, but our brains get stronger too!!!

Scientific studies done on our younger population link movement to an increase in academic performance, better social skills, and better classroom behavior. In our older population, research has shown that movement contributes to enhanced memory and a reduction in the liklihood of depression.

Alternatively, research also shows that a sedentary lifestyle can lead to poor health outcomes such as cognitive decline, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes just to name a few.

The bottom line is, the human body was designed for movement. We are not built to be sedentary. the more we move the healthier we are. Increased blood flow leads to increased oxygen delivery to the many different organs of the body. Regular stretching and exercise helps us move better, keeps our joints from getting stiff and achy, and leads to a better overall quality of life.
